Official news 1995-2006
gig cancellations – Thursday 28 September 2006
i am so sorry to those who this has fucked off. we so did not want to cancel these gigs, but they are rescheduled for november except for london and brighton!
and there will be a warm-up at the bristol louisiana on the 3rd oct. details to come.
the reasons, though they’ll seem hollow to those, who for example, have travelled, or booked hotel rooms etc, are :
there has been little-to-no press for the album and tour. only people on the website probably know of them.
the gigs had to be booked so far ahead, it was too soon. for example glasgow had only sold 14 tickets, so the decision had to be made, to postpone. i would not have wanted to be in an audience as one of 14 people, though it may have picked up on door sales.
the problems have really hit BB this time big style, and the whole thing has been cobbled together. we don’t have the cash to bring the old band members back, except for luke, as they now have jobs and can’t afford to leave work for 8 or so gigs.
i have had a new band to work with, so the pressure has been on and with no real budget to rehearse extensively, it has been finding time to get this altogether.
press has been promised, for monthly magazines etc, with a track on the cover mounted CDs. we also hope to give out special limited albmus with an extra track just for those that come to the rescheduled gigs.
i hope not to sound feeble about this, but it has turned my hair grey, and was it not for the wonderfulness of JUST FOR MEN, i’d look and probably still will look a wreck, for all these gigs.
please forgive me…
when camp cuntz like the gizzy sisters rule the world, BB find it impossible to compete as they did…but we are trying 1000%, i promise, to make this good for you.
when adverts to sell albums cost 2000 for a half page spread in mojo etc, we’re minnows in this caper…when i go to my local brent cross shopping centre and the gizzy blisters record company have plastered lift doors with adverts for their new retrograde disco shit album, i feel defiled and orwellained in a big brother, itchy, must have a shower to rid me of the stink, kind of a way.
but bare with this
do you like the album ?
does it cut mustard.
bb past its sell-by.
jesus sometimes i think so.

cyber-garage sale – Thursday 2 March 2006
forgot to say…will sign it all, of course.foetal sparrow album finishing the end…the people putting it out are atic records, andy turner who is the guy who’s AIM, which i did ‘good disease’ with. hopefully it’ll be the first of many soundacpe albums with occasional use of fucked-up voice. it will be good to get back to the old freshness of babybird recordings, which gorgeous swallowed up hook line and stinker.
cheers my friends
lo-fi greatest hits – Thursday 23 February 2006
ts about time some things were made available during this ridiculously long wait for new babybird material. theres all this old stuff going to waste under my stairs. so babybird is having a sale.
tho the new album has been ready for some months now, record companies are being friggin slow to bite on it…
but hopefully soon, and i bet you’re as tired of ‘hopefully soon’ as i am.
there will be the foetal sparrow album tho soon, with long awaited downloads on this site ! which is fucking good.

and stick it in.
apologies – Sunday 4 December 2005
the site crashed and big apologies for that. someone has complained about lack of downloads. i think his name was a Mr.Cock, but i may have that wrong. luckily though Mr.Cock has said he will up the money for the downloads, so a happy outcome all round.
Stephen has made a deal with a new label to release/part-release new instrumental material, including downloads. this will be under a new name.
on the Babybird front, two weeks in, we are in the midst of looking for a deal, with mostly good meetings, but with xmas upon us, companies tend to melt down into a mass of greatest hits and reissues, and lovely it all is too. but hopefully there’ll be news next week as some of the meetings have been not half bad.
i know the site can seem dormant at the best of times, but things are always slow to get started again, but the album does sound pretty lovely, and now with a little help from some chloroform on a hanky, we’ll suck out start point soon
babybird album finally finished – Friday 28 October 2005
seems to have taken a decade to finish mixing, but the album is finally finished and homed down to 14 tracks, some of those b-sides. it’ll be a babybird album. not under another name.
the plan now is to find a deal and release early next year with gigs.
downloads we are still working on…but they cost, but we’ll get them on somehow, with some filmclips hopefully of babybirds past, which i’ve finally compiled on computer.
i also have 3x80minute CDRs full of mostly instrumental music ready to be released under a different name. its fucking good, eventhough i say it myself.
keep you posted, as and when the right deal bites.
fingers crossed til the nails pop.
almost august – Friday 29 July 2005
the new album is now being mixed at a murderous pace, in high wycombe…being hacked up, mutilated, and lovingly reassembled into a 10-12 track album. it will be finally finished by hopefully the middle of august. we are also trying to locate cash to stick on some downloads as a pre-empt for the album.
as soon as the lp is ready, the deal of course is that, we need to get a deal. and follow it with gigs this year.
thats my plan anyway. play the stuff we never really got to play after Bugged and the breakdown with Echo, plus the new stuff…
so fingers crossed and be patient my loves.
i am 101% music, still hammering away at it in my room.
its just that sometimes the powers at be don’t see it that way. so in the meantime i plan their hideous downfall.
babybird will conquer and once again sell hundreds.
i am also planning to auction my head on this site’s new version of Ebay. any takers??
its a good solid head, but a bit mental……
almost mixing – Thursday 16 June 2005
after luke, rob and i finished in norfolk, we had a week off to assess…then went to pisa in italy. sounds glamourous but was infact a cheaper option than here. rob’s (drummer) ex-girlfriend found us a rundown dilapidated shell, away from neighbours in the middle of nowhere where we could set up shop and hone more songs. was good and productive and despite the sunshine, got thru a stack of 30pence beer, pound wine, pasta & olive oil (the stuff thats so good, the locals don’t export it), and arranged a lot of the album.
after two weeks of that, including spending the first night, waking up in the morning with a mouthful of local ants, luke and i continued structuring in a london primrose studio. craig davis was there with kes and his pissbag. madonna was downstairs in studio one, miserable as sin, not ig-knowledging a soul. daft cow.
so now its ready to mix…but with who, we’re waiting to see.
these things drag on and it may be out this year (a single ?), but if not hopefully i could ask the powers that be, and try to get some free downloads put on the site…ideas in process or stuff that won’t make the album. does everyone have plastic tablets ? could put some of that on.
cheers
stephen
a message from stephen jones – Friday 25 February 2005
dear everyone who have tirelessly hit on this site over the years. i have been pretty disillushioned by stuff in recent times. which is no damn good apology i know, but things are picking up.
finally there’s some money, some interest, in the evil world of records.
i have still been as active as ever, writing music, trying to get films to score, being a dad etc. (my daughter is now almost 4). but have led more of a retreated life, as of late, back to the early 1990s bedroom 4-track happy semi-hermit.
finally in the last three months or so, chrysalis (who are still my publishers) have stumped enough money to make a “proper” album. to take the recordings i have been amassing at home, to a better place.
so its all pretty bloody good news at the moment. and in a week or two, myself, luke and rob from babybird are going to norfolk to pump up the demos muscles, to have, i hope, something out in the summer, with gigs etc. this is our sincere hope and plan.
finally for now, i do sincerely apologise for the absence of any personal imput into the babybird site. but ain’t money a bastard.

UPDATE – Monday 2 February 2004
A few bits of news for you long sufferers.
Stephen has been busy writing some fantastic new material to comprise a new LP. For those of you who were worried about the singing styles on Almost Cured Of Sadness, these new songs are a return to the ‘classic’ Babybird vocals (but still with a fair smattering of the unique Mr Jones) and lyrically the best he’s done for ages.
He is also very busy finally fulfilling his long held ambition to score music for a films. After drowning the film industry with the Mini-CDs (1985-2000 and Plastic Tablets) he now has two (or maybe even three) soundtracks on the way (bit like buses…..).
We don’t want to tempt fate as the film industry seems even slower moving than the music, but it seems fair to say that one is rather wierd with suitably atmospherics from MR J. The other will involve his music being played by a full orchestra!! The third one could feature more top tunes and a very bizarre cover of a classic BB single!
It’s too early to say but we sure hope these will be released.
BEST OF BABYBIRD – Monday 2 February 2004
As some of you maybe aware, ECHO are releasing a 17 track BEST OF BABYBIRD on 17th Feb 2004.
Featuring all 9 Echo singles plus the Animal Noise EP plus a random collection of other tracks.
Chosen by ECHO, this is not a real ‘best of’ (although that probably would be impossible to please all tastes).
We are still hoping that this will be followed by the idea of an extended package including a DVD of all the videos.
A B-side collection is still in the pipeline for later in the year.

To order the copies of Plastic Tablets in N America, send cheque , mail order to HELLFIRE ENTERPISES LTD, see their site for morte details.

update – Tuesday 5 August 2003
After the complete let down on the Almost Cured of Sadness ‘campaign’, the mystery single release of Friend and the complete lack of gigs it’s back to square one.
Also ECHO have currently shelved plans for a Best of Babybird until next year.
So whilst a new record is being prepared
as a few items that hopefully will be of interest.
1)SJ is still hoping that a few gigs may happen but without label support its more difficult than hoped but he does want to and we are trying hard.
2)There will be an announcement very shortly about availability of the second soundtrack LP.
This will be limited to fans only by mail order and without giving too much away, its an even more wonderful package (and content)than’SJ 1985-2001′.
3) There will also be a chance to run a question and answer session with SJ ‘live’ on site. He’s away writing for the next few weeks but if you want to prepare your questions, we will announce soon how this will work.
Sorry this is not more specific but ‘watch this space’ – and maybe one day the new site will even happen.
single released – Tuesday 13 May 2003
Friend is to be released on June 9th.
Available on CD only it features a slightly modified version of the song. B-sides are ‘Retro Exterminator’ and ‘Walking in the Shadows’ as featured on the rare but illegal promos of the Lp last year.
At present there are no plans for a video.
The single is getting some radio play with more promised but its tough……
At last – Sunday 16 February 2003
At last we can confirm the following
1. ALMOST CURED OF SADNESS will be released on March 3rd 2003.
The LP is now 15 tracks with 4 interludes plus 2 bonus tracks.
2. The new site is under construction and will (hopefully) come online on the LP release date. The address will now be www.arthritiskid.com.
This will contain new information about the LP and all of Stephens new activities. It will also have a direct link to the ‘old’ Babybird site which while slightly modified, will in effect become a history of Babybird from the lo-fi records through to Bugged. So if you search for Babybird, you will find the new site and proceed from there.
3. News about singles, gigs, a new book and a second soundtrack LP will follow.
Stephen on 6 Music (BBC) – Saturday 25 January 2003
Excuse the incredibly short notice but Stephen will appear on the last ever Sean Hughes radio show on 6 Music (the BBC digital radio station)on Sunday 26th January at midday.
Plot is for chat and hopefully a couple of new LP tracks to be played.
Being BBC digital I assume there is a chance that if you miss it, it will be downloadable later.
Hope you hear it.
Babybird – The Original Lo-fi – Friday 1 November 2002
The five original Babybird ‘Lo-fi’ albums, packaged together as a boxed set, will be released by Delf Music via Castle / Sanctuary Records on Monday 18th November 2002.
Entitled “BABYBIRD -THE ORIGINAL LO-FI” this boxed set will contain all the orginal LP’s now digitally remastered (they still sound pretty lo-fi!) complete in modified card sleeves and a 20 page colour booklet. The booklet contains all the images, stories and lists contained in the original releases plus a history of these releases and a few thoughts of Mr Jones.
Additionally to the original five LPs, are included “Past Lasts Longer” and “Why” which had previously only been available on the American “Greatest Hits” compilation.
Also included in the boxed set is the bonus “Black Album”, comprising 16 previously unreleased lo-fi recordings. Many of these were in the infamous pile of 400 songs but for a variety of reasons never got included plus a few more that got recorded over the following years.
Almost Cured Of Sadness – sample free – Friday 1 November 2002
The sample issues that caused the much delayed release of “Almost Cured Of Sadness” have now been resolved.
The release is now scheduled for February 2003.
Much stress with lawyers and publishers and lots of studio fun has now resulted in sample free versions being re-recorded by Stephen (and Luke).
As usual with Stephen, the new approved version of the album will also differ quite dramatically from the version that has been flying around for the last few months, with more new tracks, some gone missing in action, a different sequence and different mixes.
This news means that we can now start to get on with all the other things that have been in limbo since the sample saga raised its ugly head.
So the equally dodgy saga of this old website, single releases, live plans, and news on a special mailorder release limited to fans (if they can cope with this sudden rush of releases!)
Good Disease by AIM feat Mr Jones – Friday 16 August 2002
The collaboration between Stephen (aka Arthritis Kid) and Andy Turner / AIM is released next week on Grand Central Records. The single also includes Stephen\’s first remix!
Stephen\’s vocals are described in NME as like a \’sleazy Al Green\’ in a usual piece of NME-ism which probably should count as a good review.
Boxed Set – Friday 16 August 2002
Whilst the further delay in the release of Almost Cured Of Sadness is causing much dismay to all concerned, November 2002 will see the release of the original five ‘Lo-fi’ albums in a boxed set.
I WAS BORN A MAN
BAD SHAVE
FATHERHOOD
HAPPIEST MAN ALIVE
DYING HAPPY
will all be packaged together in one box with a 20 page booklet.
The exciting part of this boxed set will be the additional (provisionally
titled) BLACK LP – a full LP comprising a collection of tracks that didn’t make it onto the original LPs, or were simply lost in the ‘infamous’ 400 song pile of demos plus a few that were recorded as the lo-fi LPs got released and a couple that have just appeared mysteriously.
Personally I can’t believe that we left some of these out – this is a beautiful LP and if you liked the lo-fi stuff, you will hopefully love this.
More info to follow on this.
LP release and bonus tracks – Thursday 15 August 2002
It is now confirmed that the release of Almost Cured Of Sadness has been put back to next year. Provisional release date is now 3rd Febuary 2003.
As explained before, this is due to the machinations of the legal system as samples are cleared for release. There will have to be a few changes to the planned LP but at present we do not forsee any further delay (this is bad enough as it is).
A further knock on effect has been to delay the completion of the new web site but that should be ready within a few weeks.
New Release (1) – Wednesday 5 June 2002
Stephen has recorded a track for a Lee Hazlewood tribute LP to be released on 17th June. The LP is called “Total Lee”, on the City Slang label, and features covers of Lee Hazlewood songs by various artists, including Lambchop, Tindersticks, Calexico and Jarvis Cocker. Stephen and Luke Scott have covered “We all make the flowers grow”, and it’s fantastic! More info at www.cityslang.com
New Release (2) – Wednesday 5 June 2002
Stephen’s track, “Good Disease” on the Aim LP “Hinterland” is to be released as a single by Grand Central records. The track has been remixed from the album version, and will be released on 5th August – keep watching www.grandcentralrecords.co.uk or www.aim-hinterland.com for details
Artwork for new LP – Thursday 23 May 2002
The cover image for Stephen Jones “Almost Cured of Sadness” is being stored at www.monkeygirl.plus.com until the launch of the new official site. More news here as it comes

Details of new LP announced – Thursday 2 May 2002
A new Stephen Jones LP, provisionally entitled “Almost Cured of Sadness” is due for UK release in July. The album features 16 new tracks, plus a mystery cover version – track listing and more details to follow…
OK, it’s about time… – Friday 22 March 2002
A new Stephen Jones website is currently under construction. A deadline has been set for May 1st – keep checking this page for details!
USA GIGS CANCELLED – Wednesday 29 August 2001
NEWS FLASH
Due to cicumstances beyond our control, we regretfully announce that the proposed Stephen Jones / babybird gigs due to take place in early September in the USA (Boston, New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey) can not be confirmed and will not be taking place.
There is a chance that these may be rescheduled later.
News update – Thursday 2 August 2001
It seems that some naughty person has been selling a rare promo copy of Stephens new soundtrack LP on an internet auction site and getting a very silly price for it (over £100!). It is well worth it but our advice is to wait for an imminent announcement giving details of the formal release of this beautifully packaged 24 song instrumental triple mini-CD pack. We hope this will be announced in the next few weeks and we expect it to be in the shops by late August/ early September.
There will also be more news about Stephens recent activity, new material, new name etc etc.
PLEASE SEE SOUNDTRACK LP news 02.08.01
SOUNDTRACK LP – Thursday 2 August 2001
Stephen Jones and Easy Tiger /City Slang records are very pleased to announce the long awaited release of his first instrumental LP ‘STEPHEN JONES 1985 – 2000′ on Easy Tiger records on October 8th 2001.
This is a limited edition release on a triple mini-CD format totalling 24 previously unreleased tracks. It is also packaged in a very unusual quadruple fold package (designed by Stephen).
This material represents Stephens obsession with soundtrack, breakbeat and orchestral music and is the long overdue realisation of his original reasons for making music – i.e. music to be heard with film and other visuals.
Despite reports to the contrary in some media outlets, it is still not certain what name new Stephen material will be released under.
He has written dozens of new songs and intends a series of EPs and singles to be released starting before the end of the year with a new LP due in 2002.
A new record deal for this material will be announced shortly.
Live ‘events’ are also on the cards but will not be standard gigs.
More news to follow.
USA gigs? – Thursday 2 August 2001
Re : BABYBIRD gigs in USA September 01
It seems that some of you are very sharp but we must report that these gigs are NOT yet confirmed and at the moment are 50/50.
They would involve a short 30 minute set with a US backing band plus Mr Luke Scott on his guitar and would be very unlikely to feature much, if any, new material.
They also shouln\’t even be described as BABYBIRD gigs but with Stephen on the vocals and dancing (?), thats how it will be seen. They would be the special guest support to a US band, THE STARLIGHT MINTS.
He needs to finally decide on one of the new names as soon as possible (or else we\’ll be asking you to vote for one!)
The \’new\’ style live events will definately be premiered in the UK.
Will detail the confirmation (or not) of the potential USA gigs within the next week.
